What is LEED?
LEED is a third-party certification program that considers site design, water conservation, energy use, building materials, and indoor air quality. LEED also looks at things like light pollution, transportation choices, and linking the project to the local community. It’s more than just a system of checklists and credits though. If you have a LEED building, you’ve taken a much broader approach to planning and design by addressing issues that go beyond the building. You’ve also take into account the end-users of the building, and everyone who will maintain that building, by including them in the design process.
LEED has really proven its value. It’s the most recognized and widely-used certification program in the world. It’s supported by a network of over 185,000 LEED credential holders.

Partner with local community colleges through Community Green
The Center for Green Schools recently launched Community Green, a program to support community colleges in bringing green building training and education opportunities to their campuses. Through this program USGBC is offering all public two-year institutions a first free year of USGBC membership, which now includes a revised benefits package created specifically with the college in mind. Please spread the word about this exciting opportunity to the community colleges in your area and to contact Vanessa Santos to get involved. We are seeking chapter leaders who are able to offer their expertise as guest speakers and/or advisors for college members as they work to develop green building courses and training opportunities, so please contact Vanessa if you're interested.
